Emails from companies claiming to improve your search engine ranking

If your email address is available on a website, you've most likely received spam email messages. If you have a business website, then you have likely received spam messages about discount website development or SEO services or ways to get your website on the first page of a Google Search. If you are not familiar with the terminology used, it can be difficult to determine whether an email is spam or if the services advertised are legitimate. There are many legitimate companies that offer search engine optimization services, which may improve your search engine ranking. However, these companies should be following Canada's anti-spam legislation and not send you unsolicited emails.
 
There are several ways to identify spam email messages:
  • “From” address is a Hotmail, Gmail or Outlook address rather than from a domain name belonging to a business
  • Spelling and/or grammar mistakes
  • You have not heard of the business and did not give permission to be contacted
  • There is no “unsubscribe” option at the bottom of the message
  • Excessive use of exclamation points or coloured text
 
As with any other type of spam email, if you receive an unauthorized spam email about SEO or website design, please delete it.

It is also worth mentioning that emails sent without consent of the recipient could be in violation of Canadian anti-spam legislation.
